Episode 24: What the Grey Ink Said

Previously on the Chicken Chronicles... Chester and Henrietta drove home from the Dapitan bookbinder with two new facts and one sealed envelope. Henrietta finally explained why she'd gone still in that room — she'd crossed the mystery company's name years earlier, buried in a Pampanga property dispute, filed under a trustee who wanted presence without accountability. She'd kept it to herself because E was watching, and she wasn't ready to show E the shape of what she knew. Then, at a red light, Chester opened the envelope Gregory had left for him — not for Henrietta, for you — read one short page, and said nothing at all. The light turned green. He drove the rest of the way in silence.

What the Grey Ink Said

Chester parked outside Henrietta's building and did not turn off the engine.

Henrietta noticed. She didn't reach for the door.

"You're stalling," she said.

"I'm parking badly on purpose. Buys us four more minutes before the guard comes to tell me to move."

"Chester."

He turned off the engine.

The stairwell light outside her unit was the kind that took a full seven seconds to warm up, and neither of them said anything until it did. Henrietta unlocked the door, dropped her bag by the entryway, and sat on the arm of the couch instead of the couch itself — the posture of someone who wasn't planning to stay seated.

"Read it to me," she said. "Or tell me. I don't care which."

Chester took the page out of his pocket. It had been folded and unfolded enough times now that the crease had gone soft.

"It's not long," he said, which was not the same as agreeing.

"I know. You told me that at the light."

He unfolded it anyway, though he'd had the words memorized since Buendia.

"Chester. If you're reading this, someone finally asked you to open it, and that means you found the right person, or she found you." He glanced up. Henrietta didn't move. He kept going. "There's a thing I never told your mother I knew, and a thing I never told you she knew. I'll start with yours, since it's shorter and it's the one that matters now."

He stopped there the first time too. Henrietta let the silence hold for exactly as long as it needed to.

"Your mother knew Estrella," Chester said. Not reading anymore — he didn't need the page for this part. "Before I did. Before any of this. Gregory writes that he found that out by accident, years after he'd already started at Room 12, and he never told her he knew. He says—" Chester looked back down, found the line.

"She asked me never to ask her about it, and I kept that promise longer than I've kept most things. I'm breaking it now, to you, because you're the one who's going to have to ask her instead."

Henrietta was quiet for the length of one full breath.

"Your mother's alive," she said. It wasn't a question. It was Henrietta doing the thing she did — naming what Chester had been circling.

"She's in Cabanatuan. I talk to her every other Sunday. I have never once heard her say Estrella's name."

"Do you think she knows Gregory's dead? Missing. Whichever it is."

"I don't know what she knows." Chester folded the page again, along the same soft crease. "I've been driving around this whole country chasing a stranger's mystery for three weeks, and it turns out my own mother might have been standing closer to the start of it than I was."

Henrietta didn't offer him anything soft. That wasn't her role, and they both knew it.

"Then we call her," she said. "Not tonight. But soon."

"Soon," Chester agreed, in the voice of someone buying time from himself.

Henrietta's phone rang.

Not Chester's — hers, the one whose number nobody outside a short list actually had. She looked at the screen. The number wasn't saved, but the area code was.

She looked up at Chester before answering. He nodded, once.

"Hello."

The voice on the other end was unhurried, the voice of someone who had learned to say things once and mean them the first time.

"You're both upstairs," E said. It wasn't a guess. "Good. I'm downstairs. I said I'd come myself when it was time."

Henrietta's hand went still around the phone.

"Is it time?" she asked.

"It's time," E said. "Buzz me up."
