By the end of this tutorial, you'll have a product shot that looks like it was photographed on location — without ever leaving your desk. We're talking a clean product render dropped into a real-feeling environment, with matching light, matching shadow, and zero obvious AI tells. Ten steps. The selection in step 3 is where most people blow it. I'll show you why.
What you need
Photoshop 2026 (Generative Fill requires a Creative Cloud subscription), a product shot with a clean or white background, and basic Photoshop familiarity — you know what a layer is, you've used the selection tools at least once. You don't need to know compositing. That's what today is for.

Step 1: Open your product image and duplicate the background layer
Open your file. Before touching anything, duplicate the background layer (Cmd+J / Ctrl+J). Lock the original. Every destructive edit you make will live on the duplicate. If it goes wrong, you have a clean copy underneath. Name the duplicate layer product-composite.
Step 2: Remove the existing background
Use the Object Selection Tool (W). Click your product. Photoshop generates a selection — imperfect, but fast. Refine with Select and Mask (Select → Select and Mask). Use the Refine Edge Brush on any soft or reflective edges. Output to: New Layer with Layer Mask. Your product is now floating on a transparent background. Pro tip: if your product has a reflective surface, don't obsess over perfection here — the reflection changes once the background is in place. You'll fix it in step 8.
Step 3: Expand your selection for Generative Fill context (the step everyone skips)
This is the one. The mistake: people select only the transparent area and try to fill it. Generative Fill gets a tiny sliver of context pixels and generates something generic. The fix: select a generous area that overlaps into the product edges by 15–20 pixels. Cmd-click the layer mask thumbnail to load the selection, then Select → Inverse. Then Select → Modify → Expand → 15 pixels. Now you're ready.
Step 4: Open the Generative Fill dialog
With your expanded selection active, open the Contextual Task Bar (View → Contextual Task Bar if it's not visible). Click the Generative Fill button. You'll see a text field and a Generate button. That's the whole interface.
Step 5: Write a scene prompt, not a vibe
Don't type "coffee shop." Type: "outdoor Filipino street market, golden hour light from the left, concrete pavement, shallow depth of field, warm orange ambient light." Specific direction. Specific light source. Specific surface. Adjectives about mood ("cozy," "aesthetic") are nearly useless. Adjectives about physics (light direction, surface material, time of day) are everything.
Step 6: Generate and pick your best result
Click Generate. Photoshop produces 3 variations. Scroll through all three before deciding. Look for: light direction that matches your product's highlights, a surface that makes sense, background detail that doesn't crowd the product. If none work, click Generate again — 3 more without refilling your credit. Common mistake: picking the prettiest background instead of the most physically consistent one.

Step 7: Use the Reference Image feature to lock style (new in Photoshop 2026)
In the Generative Fill dialog, click the Reference Image button (plus + photo icon). Upload an image capturing the visual mood you want — a mood board image, a lifestyle photo, or a screenshot from a previous campaign. Photoshop uses it to match lighting temperature, scene density, and texture style without cloning the image. If you have existing brand photography, upload one of those shots. Your composite will trend toward matching it without manual color grading.
Step 8: Fix the reflections and cast shadow
Generative Fill won't automatically update reflections or generate a proper cast shadow. Cast shadow: create a new layer below the product, paint loosely with a soft black brush at 30% opacity where the product meets the surface, set blend mode to Multiply, reduce opacity to 40–60%. Reflections for gloss/chrome products: duplicate the background layer, move it above the product, set blend mode to Screen at 10–20% opacity, clip it to the product layer.
Step 9: Use the Harmonize Tool to match color temperature
The Harmonize Tool (Edit → Harmonize) analyzes the generated background's dominant color temperature and applies a subtle shift to your product to match. Run it. Reduce the intensity slider to 30–50% — full strength usually oversaturates. The goal is the product and background feeling like they were shot in the same light.
Step 10: Sharpen the product edge against the new background
One composite tell is a soft edge on the product against a detailed background. Fix it: Cmd-click the product layer mask to load the selection, create a Curves adjustment layer clipped to the product, boost contrast with a subtle S-curve. This snaps the product edge visually without needing manual dodge/burn.
If you get stuck
The most common failure point is step 3. If your background looks like stock art and doesn't blend with your product, undo back to step 3 and expand your selection by more pixels. Give Generative Fill more context. It almost always fixes it.
