CHICKENPIE.Let’s make something

Papá Is in The Hague. Anak Is in Session. Good Morning.

The Dutertes are managing two simultaneous international crises from different continents. One is going better than the other.

BEHIND THE ARTWORK

Rodrigo Duterte is in The Hague. Not as a guest speaker. Not for a state visit. Not for anything he agreed to.

He is there because the International Criminal Court exists, and the Marcos administration chose not to block his transfer when the warrant arrived. The drug war killed — officially — 6,000 people. Human rights groups say 27,000. The Philippine National Police says their numbers are correct and also requests that you stop asking. The ICC spent fifteen years deciding who gets to count. Now Rodrigo is in a Dutch courtroom with a translator, and the counting continues.

Meanwhile, Sara Duterte is standing at a microphone calling the ICC a lapdog. A lapdog of Marcos. A lapdog of Trillanes. A lapdog of the international community's imaginary anti-Duterte conspiracy. She is loud and she is consistent and she is doing all of this inside her own impeachment trial.

Read that again.

Sara Duterte is appearing in Senate proceedings to defend her vice presidency while simultaneously leading the public defense campaign for a man the ICC has detained for crimes against humanity. She is doing both. At the same time. Loudly.

The word for this is confidence. There's another word, but the lawyers prefer "confidence."

The Duterte brand was always premised on the rules not applying — to them, to their operations, to the people their operations produced. It worked domestically for years because Philippine law moves slowly and Philippine politics moves fast. What the Dutertes didn't fully account for was a court that doesn't care about the next election cycle. The ICC has been investigating since 2011. It waited. It is still waiting. It is very comfortable waiting.

Sara says The Hague has no jurisdiction over her father.

Her father is currently inside The Hague.

At some point that stops being a legal argument and becomes the punchline.

We invented "walang galang" for a reason. This is just the international version, with translation services and a full hearing record.
