Considerably Weaker: The Strongman's Day in Court

Artist Statement

The former president who built an empire on being tough now sits 'considerably weaker' before the ICC. Karma has impeccable timing.

Today at The Hague, Rodrigo Duterte sits before the International Criminal Court for confirmation of charges hearings related to his administration's brutal war on drugs. His lawyer described him as 'considerably weaker' — a phrase dripping with unintentional irony.

The man who built his presidency on strongman theatrics — the midnight bike rides, the crude tirades, the unflinching defense of extrajudicial killings — now sits diminished in an international courtroom. The pillars of justice tower over him. The world watches. And suddenly, the tough-guy act has nowhere to hide.

For years, Duterte wielded power with impunity, treating human rights like suggestions and international law like background noise. His war on drugs left thousands dead in the streets, with little regard for due process or accountability. He dared the ICC to come for him. Well, here we are.

The strongman who once mocked international justice now sits in its courtroom, described by his own lawyer as 'considerably weaker.' The irony is so thick you could serve it with rice.

This isn't schadenfreude — it's accountability. For the families of victims, for the survivors, for the Filipinos who lived in fear of their own government's violence, this moment matters. The strongman may be weaker, but justice doesn't need to flex. It just needs to show up.

And it did. Right on time.
