297 Betting Machines Got Confiscated. The Roosters Are Still Employed.

The BIR raided 11 cockpits and seized 297 illegal betting machines. The chickens, who do the actual fighting, remain fully licensed and completely unbothered.

Eleven cockpits got raided this week. Two hundred ninety-seven betting machines, gone. Computerized terminals, servers, sabong tablets — all seized because nobody had a Permit to Use.

The chickens watched the whole thing from their coops. Unbothered. They didn't need a permit. They've been doing this job since before the Spanish showed up with better paperwork.

Here's the reversal nobody's talking about: the rooster is the only licensed party in that entire arena. He trained for this. He signed no forms, filed no PTU, and yet he is, structurally speaking, the most compliant employee in Philippine gambling. Everyone else needed a machine to cheat the system. He just needed spurs.

The BIR called it an enforcement operation. The sabungeros called it a Tuesday. The chickens didn't call it anything — chickens don't talk — but if they did, it would sound like "again with this."

Somebody built an app for this. E-sabong. Livestreamed cockfights, monetized like a Twitch stream, minus the emotional support. The government licensed part of it, lost track of the rest, and ended up with a gap worth billions. So instead of touching the app — legally murky, politically loud — they raided eleven physical cockpits with actual chickens in them. Smaller target. Same headline. Much safer Tuesday.

Follow the confiscated machines. They didn't go to a landfill. They went to an evidence room, where they will sit, silently depreciating, until someone remembers why they were seized. That's the real Filipino business model — not the betting. The storage.

Meanwhile the rooster goes back to the coop. Tomorrow there's another cockpit, another crowd, another guy holding cash he shouldn't be holding. The betting machines can get raided. The bloodsport cannot. It's older than the tax code, older than the permit system, older than the concept of a receipt.

We built a whole regulatory apparatus to license something that was never going to ask permission. The rooster's job security has never once depended on paperwork. Ours does. That's the punchline, and it's on us, not him.

Two hundred ninety-seven machines confiscated. Zero roosters detained. If you wanted proof of who's actually running things in that arena, there it is.
